Happy birthday the Right Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. My Ifa people in Cuba tell me there is a photo of Garvey from around 1915-ish with a group of Cuban babalawos. They say he was initiated into Ifa. I am trying to track down this photo because if it’s true it’s the most explosive, incredible newsflash for the Diaspora and for the Rasta movement. It seems very plausible. Garvey travelled around the Caribbean at that time and visited Cuba. Given who he was and what he valued it is highly probable that he would have linked up with the practitioners of African religion on the island. My guess is that he probably received Owo Ifa kan, which is known in Cuba as awofaka or mano de Orula. Receiving ‘one hand of Ifa’ is the basic entry-level initiation into Ifa, where you discover your ruling Odu (Ifa verse) and your guardian Orisha and are given the template for the sacred energies active in your life. With this knowledge you can play to your natural strengths and avoid the areas of life where you are more likely to struggle. It is a powerful and beautiful ceremony that sets you up for a fully-realised, self-actualised lifetime of achievement and expression. Garvey most certainly did this. Even though he had problems with light-skinned Blacks and most likely would not have called me brother I am clear that we are all indebted to him, his life and his work.
